The gangling former Texan arose to the heights of the nation’s leading independent director of major auto racing from the humble station of “grease monkey.” Nunis deserted the roaring road more than a pair of decades ago and became the hired hand of the late Ralph A. Hankinson, who he warmly referred to as “Pappy.” He learned fast and well under this great maestro and just prior to World War II, he inherited the vast empire once known as Ralph Hankinson Speedways.
