At the 2016 Racers Reunion Banquet, we featured three gentlemen who have been identified by many as the all-time greatest midget car drivers. We celebrated the success and stories of three of the greatest midget car drivers ever – Mel Kenyon, Sleepy Tripp and “Bronco” Bill Schindler. It was an outstanding evening as we learned more about these talented drivers and recognize their success.
In addition to the feature presentation on the greatest midget car drivers we were honored to have George Follmer as our special guest at the 2016 Racers Reunion Banquet.
There are drivers who have crossed over and had success in more than one series, but no one is as versatile as George Follmer. He began his career in Southern California and from there went on to compete in the USAC IndyCar series, Formula One, SCCA United States Road Racing, International Race of Champions, NASCAR, Trans-Am and Can-Am, to mention a few.
As you can imagine, with Follmer racing against the best drivers in the world, he not only developed a talent for winning but he participated in a host of special encounters that he shared with the group.
The afternoon was started of with presentation about one of the nation’s premier dirt racing events, the “Hutchinson Nationals”. The first race, in 1957, was in Oklahoma City. However, the facility proved to be too small for the colossal turnout so it was moved to Hutchinson, Kansas.
